From a trial lawyer's perspective vioxx was the perfect drug. It was prescribed to millions of patients despite concern by some researchers that it might cause heart problems. Then a study confirmed what the researchers had suspected: Among people taking the drug for more than 18 months, Vioxx appeared to double the risk of heart attacks. Facing billions of dollars in liability, Merck did the rational thing and pulled Vioxx off the market.
