When george (gus) sauter took over Vanguard's indexing operation in 1987, the firm had just one stock index fund, with $1 billion in assets. Today the Vanguard 500 Index is the world's largest mutual fund, with $104 billion. Sauter also manages 50 other index funds at Vanguard, ranging from Small-Cap Value to European Stock. All told, Sauter, now Vanguard's chief investment officer, runs $300 billion in indexed assets.
