I got a story to tell!" shouts Julian Curry, grabbing the microphone with one hand, stabbing the air with the other, punctuating every syllable. The crowd claps and whoops. It is a weeknight, and Curry, a mutual fund wholesaler at Oppenheimer Funds in Manhattan, is still wearing his suit and tie. Bathed in the spotlight of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, he launches into "The Colored Corporate Blues" ―a signature poem. "It's about a corporate America hell," he declaims in rhyme, "where the kings are surprised by the words I can spell and say silly things to me like 'You speak so well.'" He's read only four lines, and already his audience is hooked.
