The magazine publishing world was rocked to its bindings earlier this summer when Wal-Mart announced in July it would begin inserting plastic, U-shape blinders to cover up checkout-lane copies of women's staples like Cosmopolitan, Redbook and Glamour. The cover lines were simply too racy for the wandering eyes of small children. Champions of free speech (and free enterprise), be warned. Wal-Mart, responsible for 15% of magazine newsstand sales in the U.S., insists the decision was purely its own. It came two months after the company stopped carrying the saucy lad magazines FHM, Maxim and Stuff.
