Amenhotep III, the 14th-century b.c. egyptian pharaoh, could hardly have foreseen the problems he would cause 3,300 years after his death. A stone bust of the pharaoh is in Britain's Scotland Yard. The police don't know what to do with it. The Cairo government claims the head was taken out of Egypt illegally and is poised to sue for it. The company that last owned the head, Robin Symes Ltd., is in A receivership. There may be other parties who will try to lay claim to it. How did the pharaoh, known for keeping his enemies at bay, get into such a scrape? Start with Robin Symes, once one of London's most famous antiquities dealers, who bought the head in 1992 for $1.2 million. But he's been embroiled in a nasty legal fight with the estate of Christo Michailidis, his deceased business and live-in partner, and was forced into personal bankruptcy. The Michailidis estate now holds at least a 50% interest in Robin Symes Ltd. Further complication: The head partly secured $10 million or so in loans Citibank made to Robin Symes Ltd.; the debt to Citibank has been paid off by the loans' guarantors.
