Maybe the Frenchman should also get a pad in Imperial County, Calif., where Vivendi has a valuable, and much fought-over, asset: water rights. The Imperial Valley is about as far as you can get from the glitz of Hollywood and Paris. Located on the Mexican border east of San Diego, the 4,597-square-mile desert county has only one Starbucks. Cattle graze lazily under the blistering midday sun in dust-choked fields. Highlights of the year include the Holtville Carrot Festival and the Brawley Cattle Call.
