A freight company grew to become the largest black-owned business in America. But a slowing economy is putting the brakes on it. Charlie W. johnson is a big man running a big business. At 56, the former defensive guard—he once helped win the Super Bowl for the 1970 Baltimore Colts—is still a hulk: 290 pounds on a 6-foot-3 frame. But on a recent morning, slumped in his leather office chair in the mostly black West End neighborhood of Louisville, Ky., Johnson looks defeated. Dressed in a pair of blue sweatpants and a canary-yellow company T shirt, he has been on the speaker phone with Ford Motor Co. parts managers, demanding to know nesses, hauling everything from steel and turbines to heavy trucks, that grew into the largest U.S. black-owned venture in 1999, based on figures from Black Enterprise magazine. It netted an estimated $5 million on combined revenues of $500 million.
