Robert peary and frederick Cook had rough trips attempting to be the first to the North Pole in 1909, enduring frostbite, starvation and mutiny. You can have an easier time of it if you have the money for a ticket aboard the nuclear-powered Russian icebreaker Yamal. The 23,000-ton ship, designed to sweep ice from the Northern Sea Route to make way for military vessels during the Cold War, has been pressed into service for tourism. Since 1993 it has made 14 polar trips to gratify the wanderlust of rich adventurers who are customers of Quark Expeditions, a travel outfit in Darien, Conn.
