Conagra chief executive Bruce Rohde is talking business, but he can't keep his eye off the bald eagle circling the pond outside headquarters in Omaha. An avid flier of gliders and other aircraft, Rohde often uses raptors to mark upward drafts of wind. "That eagle is way up there," he muses. "Must be some serious lift." ConAgra could use a serious up-draft, too. Under Rohde, a 51-year-old lawyer who served as the company's outside legal counsel for 22 years before joining in 1996, ConAgra has done anything but soar. Sales nudged up 1.5% to $24.5 billion in the fiscal year that ended May 30, 1999; profits rose 11% to $700 million (before charges) after a mediocre fiscal 1998. During his tenure shares of ConAgra-which makes everything from fertilizer to Slim Jim meat snacks-have fallen 28% to a recent $23.75.
