On Dec. 4 stephen smith, an investment counselor in suburban Philadelphia, raised his paddle for an American blanket chest handpainted with salmon and black tulips. The miniature piece, made in 1777, is 9 inches by 14.75 inches by 9.5 inches. It is considered an exceptional example of this early Pennsylvania Dutch style, sometimes used to store bibles or as a sample of the maker's craft. Bidding started at $20,000 at the Pook & Pook auction house sale held at Pennsylvania's Ludwig's Corner Firehouse. The previous auc-tion record for a painted blanket chest was $47,000. Smith ultimately got the chest for $220,000.
