From retailers to railroaders, archrivals are banding together to launch Web portals aimed at electronically tying buyers to suppliers, beefing up collective-purchasing muscle and auctioning inventory. The plans sound bold-the world's automakers are salivating over a 1% cut in their $1.7 trillion supply-chain spending-but execution will take a succession of miracles.
