The folks at digital island have figured out a great way to buy the thousands of computers they need to run streaming video across the Internet—they sell an equity stake to a computer company, then spend the money buying computers from that company. Computer makers, far from resisting, in fact are fighting for these deals. A few months ago Compaq Computer beat out two other rivals for the chance to sell Digital Island 8,000 servers at heavy discounts. Compaq spent $15 million to buy shares in Digital Island and committed $50 million in lease financing at advantageous rates. "We negotiated one vendor against the other and worked out the best deal we could," says Leo Spiegel, president of Digital Island in San Francisco.
