Think of the buzz phrase "knowledge worker" and you picture folks sitting in offices in front of their PCs or laptops. Now the concept is flowing downstream. Blue-collar workers, in factories, on the road or outdoors, are being given computers and are using the Internet. Rather than leafing through work manuals or waiting for headquarters to call, they can retrieve more information faster. It seems to boost productivity-and the workers' sense of empowerment.
