Terrence murray, chief executive of Fleet Financial, was buying a drink at a bar one day when he spotted a director from Bank of Boston. He ordered a second glass and walked over to the man. The betting was that Bank of Boston would beat Murray's outfit in the bidding for a failed lender recently seized by the government. Fleet would then be too small not to be taken over itself. But this mill worker's son doesn't mind playing even the poorest of hands, especially if the other fellow shows his cards.
