David Komansky, the 59-year-old chief executive of Merrill Lynch, lords over quite an empire. In 1998 Merrill generated revenues of $36 billion and earned $1.3 billion. Merrill is ranked number one or two in most investment banking categories. It is a powerhouse in global finance, with 1,000 offices in 45 countries. Its 18,000-person army of retail brokers has amassed $1.2 trillion in retail client assets, nearly double the figure for rival Citigroup's Salomon Smith Barney.
