Unlike stocks, real estate offers income to live on and, for worrywarts, inflation protection. Plus, great properties are currently cheap and accessible to every investor who's ever bought a stock or invested in a mutual fund. According to Ken Heebner, famed manager of the CGM funds in Boston: "You're buying stocks today after a protracted period of rising prices. But we're at the opposite point in the real estate cycle." Investing in bundled real estate properties that trade like stocks, called REITs, offers the dual benefit of diversifying a concentrated stock portfolio while generating strong and steady returns.
