Disease-related quality of life is becoming increasingly important in oncological healthcare. Over the past few years several specific models have been developed for the systematic integration of quality of life into follow-up treatment. The aim of such models is to detect deficits in quality of life at an early stage, to discuss them together with the patient and in the long-term to treat them with targeted therapies. To include quality of life as an integral part of oncological healthcare necessitates the presentation of quality of life results in a clear and easily accessible manner. Furthermore, precise recommendations are required for the treatment of potential deficits in quality of life. A complex intervention is required for evaluating effectiveness. These demands are met by a project on the systematic diagnosis and therapy of quality of life in patients with primary breast cancer conducted by the Tumor Center Regensburg. Results of quality of life measurements are presented in an easily accessible profile. An expert report connects this profile with exact treatment recommendations that also consider patient health status. The effectiveness of this quality of life system could be demonstrated in a complex intervention trial. In the long-term, similar to traditional medical treatment, quality of life has to be considered a regular, significant and systematic part of oncological healthcare.
