Mesothelioma is one of the rarer diseases in Germany. Asbestos fibers in particular and also ionizing radiation and viruses are known or discussed as etiological factors. In Germany the classification of mesothelioma of the diaphragm, peritoneum or pericardium caused by asbestos has been on the list of occupational diseases since 1977. The annual incidence rate has been continuously increasing due to the long latency period. There is a lack of options for treatment for most of the malignant forms and the mean survival time is less than 12 months. For patients and families a short-term clarification of insurance issues is important.
