EFFECTS OF Mg NUTRITION ON ANATOMICAL LEAF STRUCTURE IN Cd TREATED YOUNG SUGAR BEET PLANTS

摘要

The pairs of completely developed sugar beet leaves were sampled in order to analyze the effect of magnesium nutrition on anatomical leaf structure in Cd-treated plants. Plants were grown in semi-controlled conditions with different Mg treatments. After 44 days one half of plants of each Mg treatment was exposed to 1×10~(-6) M Cd. Seven days after the application of Cd, plants were harvested. The influence of Cd on lamina and petiole were presented as the relative change value of Cd-treated plants, compared to the Cd-untreated plants. Apart from leaf and root morphological analysis, measurements of anatomical parameters were conducted on cross sections of lamina, leaf main veins and petiole. Concentrations of Cd decrease almost linearly in leaves and roots with increase in Mg concentrations. Influence of Cd on anatomical characteristics of sugar beet leaves was dependent on Mg nutrition. Significant changes of anatomical characteristis of sugar beet leaves in the presence of various Mg treatments, was obtained just for the characteristics of lamina. The most significant differences between the analyzed groups were found for measured parameters of the leaf main vein (area of main vein and percent of phloem cell cross section area).
