Third-generation wireless networks are delivering on the promise of high-speed data access, but they will not displace older wireless networks. Instead they will extend the limits of networking functionality for mobile workers. Broadband (high-speed) wireless will usher in supply chain applications that require quick downloads of large, complex files, such as customer database files, back-office applications, and repair manuals. Just as important, broadband will improve existing applications to levels previously found only in wired networks. For applications that don't require the in- creased data volume that comes with high-speed broadband, the older technologies and services will still be the best way to go. (See the chart comparing wlde-area wireless net-work service providers at www.frontlineto day.com.) What does all of this mean for implementers of supply chain technology? Essentially, that they should stop looking for one wireless wide-area network to meet all of their needs arid start sorting through the services offered by the dif-ferent carriers to find the right mix of solutions for their business.
