FT-IR carbonyl bands of bio-oils: Importance of water

The most important feature of bio-oil is the high contents of various oxygen-containing functional groups. FT-IR spectroscopy is therefore one of the most powerful analytical techniques to characterise the composition of various bio-oils. In a recent study [1], we developed a method for the deconvolution of the carbonyl region (1490-1850 cm~1) of the FT-IR spectra of bio-oils into 9 Gaussian bands (1767,1740,1713,1696,1654,1606,1565, 1517, 1501 cm"1), each assigned to typical functional groups found in bio-oils. The method allows quantitative comparison of relative concentrations of various types of carbonyl functional groups among different bio-oils. Because the water absorption in this region is generally considered to be of relatively weak strength [2,3], our deconvolution method [1] did not consider the water absorption. However, further investigation showed that the absorption of water in this region may not be negligible. This is because of the high content of water in bio-oil, which varies with the pyrolysis conditions to produce the bio-oil, the type of biomass substrate (including moisture contents) and the treatment of bio-oil after pyrolysis. The letter aims to illustrate the importance of water absorption in the study of carbonyl functional groups in bio-oils, serving as a correction of our method outlined previously [1].
