Parametric study of flame length characteristics in straight and swirl light-fuel oil bumers

The present work studied the flame length characteristics of light-fuel oil (solar) burned inside horizontal straight and swirl burners working below their minimum conventional operating fuel pressures of 0.3 MPa. Tests were carried out to examine the effects of burner geometry, primary (atomizing) air-fuel mass flow rate ratio, fuel-air pressure ratio, fuel mass flow rate and degree of swirling on flame length. Statistical analysis was performed to analyze and fit experimental data to functional parametric equations relating the flame length to all parameters for both the straight and swirl bumers with an average absolute percentage error of 11.5/100. Data analysis showed that the flame length generally decreased with increasing primary (atomizing) air-fuel mass flow rate ratio, burner tube diameter, axial distance between combustor exit and entrance of bumer tube, fuel-air pressure ratio and degree of swirling represented by air tangential angular speed. The flame length increased with increasing burner tube length. The flame length of a straight bumer behaved almost the same as that of a swirl burner. It was found that the turndown ratio of these burners reaches a value about 10.
