An arc-heated plasma wind tunnel with power of 0.4 MW has been constructed at Chonbuk National University (CBNU) in Korea. A segmented arc plasma torch was adopted as the plasma source and was designed to produce a supersonic plasma flow with enthalpy greater than 270 kJ/mol at a velocity of Mach 3. The characteristics of the plasma flow were investigated for gas flow rates ranging from 5 x 10(5) to 8 x 10(5) sccm and input current ranging from 200 to 350A. The facility is capable of producing ion flux greater than 10(24) m(-2) s(-1), as well as heat flux greater than 10 MW/m(2), levels that are relevant for the study of plasma material interactions under fusion reactor conditions.
