This special issue contains extensions of work presented at the 2010 e-Science conference, held in Brisbane, Australia in December 2010. e-Science requires simultaneous developments in both applications and the underlying cyber-infrastructure. This requires research teams with expertise ranging from computer science to fields as diverse as atmospheric physics and systems biology. The papers in this special issue report developments in both the applications and the cyber-infrastructure. Pettit et al. discuss an ecoinformatics platform for supporting climate change adaptation research. The platform includes a metadata discovery tool, a workflow framework, geographical visualization tools, a landscape object library and construction tool, and an online collaboration space.
