摘要

The term "Grid computing" was introduced almost ten years ago by Ian Foster and Carl Kesselman [1]. Since then, the international Grid research community has been very active in designing and building Grid to the level of a production infrastructure. Even though the intervening period saw a rapid growth in technology and in Grid research, it would appear that the original Grid vision has not changed much. This fact was underlined in a recent survey of the research community in late 2006 [2], where leaders in the field were asked to describe what they understood by Grid computing and the influences that Web Services and Service-Oriented Architectures were having on the notion of Grid. The idea of this special journal section was to extend these original opinions and to invite the community at large to provide their understanding of the current status and perceived future directions of Grid.
