Sharpening the edge: Towards improved edge computing environment for mobile and IoT applications

Cloud architectures and related technologies will play an increasingly important role in our society, particularly as mobile devices (e.g. laptops, smartphones, and tablets) and Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as sensing devices (e.g. temperature sensors, and wearable devices) and smart home devices (e.g. smart TVs), become more commonplace. Some of these applications are time- or delay-sensitive and/or data-intensive, and hence a number of new requirements have surfaced; thus, resulting in new cloud (or extended) provisioning models to support application development and deployment for different settings [1]. One such example is Mobile Backend as a Service (MBaaS), which supports cloud services commonly needed by web and mobile systems, such as data storage, identity and access management, synchronization and push notifications. There is also a corresponding increase in focus and interest in the academic community, as reflected by the literature. For example, there have been research focusing on offloading [2, 3] and cyber-foraging [4] to allow applications on resource-constrained devices to be seamlessly and efficiently "executed" locally via the actual execution of computation and data processing on remote and powerful cloud servers. However, such an approach may not be suitable for time- or delay-sensitive and data-intensive applications in domains such as smart healthcare, ambient-assisted living and smart cities, and adversarial environment such as battlefields and military settings (e.g. Internet of Battlefield Things) [5,6].
