摘要

1. Reproduction by external fertilization, when eggs and sperm are released into the water and seek each other, is common to many aquatic organisms. The immotile egg releases chemoattractants that help sperm to navigate to the site of fertilization. This directed swimming behaviour of sperm is called chemotaxis(1). In the sea urchin Arbacia punctulata, a model organism for external fertilization, the signalling pathway underlying sperm chemotaxis has been well explored. Here, a K~+-selective cyclic nucleotide-gated (CNG) channel is a key player in chemotaxis(2).
