My wife and I once owned a beautiful sailboat, a sloop, made in Taiwan. It was a 37-foof double-ender, strong and ocean going. It had a deep and full keel running from midship to the stern, growing as it ran aft in depth and volume. This underwater arrangement made the boat quite stable when its motion was forward, but when it backed the motion was essentially unpredictable since in the reverse direction the center of pressure was forward of the yaw axis of the boat. In reverse, it was indeed unpredictable.
