摘要

In his groundbreaking book, The Structure of Scientific Revolution, Thomas Kuhn wrote that paradigms act both as organizers for our thoughts and as sieves, filtering out all information incapable of fitting into these organizational structures. Thus, organizing structures may become organizing strictures. We fail to notice ideas that do not conform to our notion of reality (Kuhn 1960, Barker 1993). Although published over 38 years ago, Kuhn's premise remains valid, and takes on deeper meaning as our understanding of complex systems grows. Many physicists, biologists, philosophers, psychologists, healthcare practitioners, and religious leaders stress the impact of both personal and social paradigms in the change process. Descartes once said, "I think, therefore, I am." In contrast, the new physics suggest, we create our own reality by becoming what we are capable of thinking.
