摘要

Benjamin Franklin was a unique figure in American and world history. He was able to lead in the arenas of business, science, and technology; in community and civic life; in philosophy and personal values; and in building the new nation and international relations. As well, Benjamin Franklin was an early futurist, pondering the future of technology, for example, in agriculture and medicine, while recognizing and lamenting the possible disconnect between the progress of technology and that of social structures. This paper explores the range of Franklin's contributions, the pace of innovation and change since the Enlightenment, and the need for and likelihood that individuals can make contributions again on the scale he did, given today's rapid pace of change. We address the questions of "When, where, and how might another Ben Franklin arise?" Ben himself identified some characteristics of an education system capable of producing a new generation of Franklinesque figures.
