Competitive intelligence (CI) has been perceived as an activity primarily concerned with analyzing the competitors of an organization and as an activity that considers the environments of that organization. This means that CI professionals not only have to focus on their competitors, but also on their organization's stakeholders and on developments in their environment. It then becomes necessary to ask what will happen tomorrow, or what will happen next? Wright et al. (2002), for instance, urge organizations to anticipate the moves of their competitors. If traditional CI is perceived in a broader sense, it develops a strong connection to the field of futures studiesrn(FS).
