As futurists, we are thoroughly occupied with change. We look at curves indicating this or that development; we map substitutions taking place; we produce scenarios to provoke concern about shifts in the future. Apart from spotting trends, we are much engaged in anticipating critical surprises: the Delphi method was designed to offer ways to discern important breakthroughs before they occurred.
