摘要

Of all the myriad types of human-made waste that have been introduced into the world since the dawn of the industrial revolution, perhaps the longest-lived is radioactive waste. This waste is so long-lived it will outlast the current generation by between 100 and a million years. This means that the electricity produced by modern nuclear power stations will deliver waste upon the Earth that will linger on for some 200,000 more generations. The long-lived nature of nuclear waste is equalled by its pernicious character. Plutonium, for example, is one of the most toxic substances humans ever produced. The not-so-dangerous nuclear waste is also pretty dangerous. Strontium 90, for example, is harmful for only 600 years but, if it manages to leak out of a rusty waste container and then leach into the water table it could eventually find its way into drinking water and accumulate in the bones and teeth of children, vastly increasing their chance of contracting leukemia and other cancers.
