And love Creation's final law-Though Nature, red in tooth and claw With ravine, shrieked against his creed-. rnCooperation between companies is becoming an integral part of the new model for business organization in a globalized economy. Throughout biological evolution, it has been cooperation rather than competition that has been the more important theme in the progression from individual cells, to multicellular organisms, to groups-over the past 3.5 billion years. Our unit of analysis has recently escalated further from cultural or economic groupings such as firms, to the growing planetary networks of companies (Das and Teng, 2002). Today, the largest economic grouping is not the multinational corporation, but the global industry network consisting of companies that simultaneously compete and cooperate. The "fittest" corporation of the 21st century and beyond will be the one that has mastered the arts of competition, when acting alone, as well as those of collaboration when part of a cooperating worldwide network. This article will focus on the evolution of corporate cooperation and the conditions that foster cooperative groups on a planetary scale.
