摘要

The importance of considering the future research requirements of sport management in Australia is underpinned by the nature of globalization, namely, the diminution of national barriers to capital, technology and information exchange, an upsurge in the power of corporations at the expense of the state, rampant economic progress where the market is the principle mediator of activity, and an inequity in the distribution of the spoils. These factors have in turn encouraged professional sport to focus on the economic imperatives of their activity, thus creating a research agenda mired in a short-term survival and prosperity mentality. However, such a market-driven view only considers part of professional sport's research requirements. A medium and long-term perspective also suggests that social and ideological or political issues need to be researched. The implications of the short-term economic agenda, which revolve around the optimization of technology, management, marketing, and ultimately revenue, neither reveal themselves immediately nor stimulate immediate attention in professional sport. While the implications may take longer to resolve, their investigation cannot be delayed. The relevance of changing temporal demands on the research agenda should remind us that sound research is strongly embedded in a context. Given that any speculation about the future is less about prediction than preparation, the onus falls upon researchers to select meaningful programs of inquiry.
