SURFACES can be a humble component to a design scheme and are often engaged with on a subconscious level. But while they may largely go unnoticed and are unlikely to form a show-stopping centrepiece, it is foolish to ignore or downplay surfaces' power to have an impact on spaces. They can both enable or prohibit certain activities and comfort and even influence our moods. But their importance is clear, as this month celebrates surface design both at FX with this Focus; and in industry, with the Surface Design Show returning to the Business Design Centre in London. To date it is the largest dedicated surface design show exhibition in the UK, and will see designers, architects and manufacturers come together and explore new ideas and powerful collaborations.
