Like the cultural centre to the north of Rizhao, the thermal baths are also part of the infrastructure of a new settlement in a landscape characterized by hills and watercourses. The rectangular building spans the course of a stream, which is dammed at this point, and is positioned flush with the topography in the steep bank areas. The two extensively transparent facades of the one-storey bridge structure open up to the water and provide a view over the valley basin and on to the forested hills. In the interior, right-angled spatial volumes that overlap at the corners form sequences of spaces. The overlapping areas are developed upwards as light sources that are interconnected around the two introverted water basins with separate relaxation areas, which are separated by gender and open up to the sky. A restaurant and public swimming pool complete the wellness complex. In each section, stairs lead to the flat roof, from which it is possible to experience the surrounding landscape. The concentration on the sequence of spaces made of concrete cast in situ interconnects the vertical incidence of light in the introverted areas and the horizontal looks out into the surroundings in a fascinating way.
