With a few exceptions in the book market, buyers of inkjet production systems in the past have purchased printing engines as unfinished systems independent of in-line finishing extensions. InkJet press manufacturers have not had the in-house competence in post- print equipment and have worked with subcontractors to cobble together finishing systems that, in many cases, were incomplete or offered performance parameters not in line with end user's needs or with the inkjet printer's capabilities. Finishing systems often came across as afterthoughts for the user. Buyers were left on their own in many cases to add finishing systems. Some postpress equipment manufactures also provided equipment with limited product flexibility and automation not designed and built for 2-3 shift continuous production.
