摘要

Fountain solution is a major component of the offset lithographic process. Its chemistry has four basic ingredients: water, gum, acid, and a series of additives. Because water comprises more than 96% of the solution, keeping a stable water supply is of key importance. A consistent fountain solution helps control the variables that affect quality and profits through minimizing waste and spoilage. Inconsistent water causes press problems such as plate scum-up, color variation and slow ink drying. Usually, incoming tap water is not very stable. Water suppliers are concerned with generating safe drinking water; therefore they vary the added chemicals along with seasonal changes. While a fountain solution's water supply should be stable and consistent, it should not be pure. Pure, or distilled, water is chemically aggressive and not very compatible with the lithographic printing process.
