Since the beginning of the 1980s, the global economy has undergone a number of sweeping changes. This paper compares the experiences of two regions undergoing restructuring as part of this global shift, Denmark and the state of Indiana in the American Midwest. The distinct cultural histories of Denmark and Indiana have resulted in dramatically different forms of restructuring in the two regions: high wage, lower employment negotiated restructuring in Denmark and low wage, higher employment neo-liberal restructuring in In- diana. The comparison serves to underline the economic, social, and political characteristics of each approach.
