Recently there has been an upsurge in interest in sea urchinrnevolution, inspired in part by the acquisition in 2006 ofrna complete echinoid DNA sequence, use of echinoids asrnmodel organisms in a variety of contexts, their importantrnroles as keystone consumers in several ecological realms,rnand events that lead to major embryological changes notrnonly in developmental modes but in axes of symmetry. Thernevolutionary history of the group is therefore of extremernimportance, and Barras has provided a fine glimpse intorna major component thereof. He considers the systematicsrnof more than 30 critical Jurassic species, provides manyrnluscious drawings and photos for these forms, develops wellexplicatedrnkeys to their identification, sets the taxa in arnstratigraphic context, clarifies many nomenclatural problems,rnand then analyses phylogenetic relationships. As a referencernwork on British Jurassic echinoids, the book is unparalleledrnin its breadth of coverage and detail. There are fine drawingsrnand descriptions of overall morphology to help the novice,rnand plenty of information for specialists as well. For me,rnthe photos on page 32 showing the spines, pedicellariae, andrneven a sphaeridium otherwise so rarely preserved in fossilrnurchins (never mind those from the Mesozoic) are almostrnworth the price of admission alone. There are also numerousrnplots of various anatomical features that provide a glimpserninto the carefully collected mensural data that are required torndistinguish species.
