摘要

The Kansas River and its tributaries drain approximately 60,000 square miles of the center of the United States, flowing from northeast Colorado, western Kansas, and southern Nebraska to the Missouri River in Kansas City. In spite of this large drainage basin, it is probably fair to assume that the river system is largely unknown to those from outside the region (except for outsiders who attended university at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, or Kansas State University in Manhattan, both of which are located along the banks of the Kansas River). And yet, in spite of its relative obscurity, the Kansas River basin provides a textbook example for studying channel migration, migration cutoffs, and associated phenomena such as meander scrolls, downvalley sliding, and questions of channel stability. Dr. Wakefield Dort, Jr., Professor Emeritus of Geology at the University of Kansas, has devoted several decades of his professional career in mapping these phenomena through the use of aerial photographs, historical maps, and archival research. The result is an amazing, outstanding atlas that could be used as a template for what should be done (where sufficient historical maps and aerial photographs exist) for every major river basin in the world.

Wakefield Dort,Jr.致力于使用航空照片,历史地图和档案研究来绘制这些现象,致力于他的职业生涯数十年。结果是了不起的,出色的地图集,可以用作世界上每个主要流域应采取的措施(有足够的历史地图和航拍照片的地方)的模板。
