With its large number of pages (949), this volume is consistent with the several other tomes in the SEG Investigations in Geophysics series. Copiously illustrated with numerous and excellent figures, tables, and photographs (e.g., Chapter 2 has 170 figures and tables) as well as printing of the highest quality and at a relatively low price, it is a first-rate value. Obviously, anything approaching a comprehensive review would be impossible, so I will try to present the essence of this volume. The author defines two scales for the application engineering seismology: (1) narrow - building investigations, infrastructure for dams, levees, bridges, tunnels, and landslides with an estimate of earthquake risks; and (2) broad - investigations of historic sites, archaeological sites, and groundwater, coal, and mineral exploration, to name just several. Math is at a minimum in text but is presented in the appendices.
