Aerobes Ausdauertraining am Morgen als Therapie gegen Winterdepression

Winter depression (SAD) is thought to be a consequence of phase disturbances in the circadian timing system. Corresponding to this phase-shift hypothesis exposure to bright light in the morning has been proved to be an effective therapy for SAD. Since in a diurnal primate induced motor activity was shown to produce similar phase responses as light does, we tested whether early morning exercises also have a therapeutic effect on SAD. Each 12 winter-depressed and healthy women (experimental group EXP, control group CⅠ) experienced early morning exercises in form of aerobics on 12 successive days from 07:00- 08:00. A second control group (CⅡ) of 9 winter-depressed women came together at the same time of day without performing exercises. Before and after the test period depression scores were determined by the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and Beck's Depression Inventory. Part of EXP (n = 9) and Cl (n = 11) experienced 28-h constant routines with blood sampling at 1 h or 2 h intervals. Plasma samples were analysed for hormone (melatonin, prolactin, cortisol, TSH, T3J4) and neurotransmitter (serotonin, do-pamine, NE, HVA, 5-HIAA) concentrations. After treatment depression scores were significantly reduced in EXP (p < 0.01) and remained unchanged in CⅡ. In EXP plasma levels (24 h-means) of melatonin and free T4 (p < 0.01) as well as T4 and free T3 (p < 0.05) were decreased whereas the dopamine level was increased (p < 0.05). In Cl reduced levels of cortisof, 5HIAA (p < 0.01), T4, T3 and free T3 (p < 0.05) were observed. The melatonin rhythm was phase advanced in EXP and CⅠ (p < 0.05) after the exercise period while the 24 h-patterns of cortisol, prolactin, and dopamine were advanced only in Cl. Thus early morning exercises may represent a suitable alternative to the light therapy of SAD. The observed improvement in mood and the phase advance of the melatonin rhythm are in keeping with Lewy's phase- shift hypothesis.
