This study should provide data about function of cardiorespiratory system and blood lactate concentration under elevated atmospheric pressure. 22 professional divers performed bicycle - spiroergometry at sea level (0,1 MPa) and at depth (dry hyperbaric chamber, 30m = 0,4 MPa) with work loads of 100 Watts, 3,0 W/kg and 3,5 W/kg for 3 min each. For the whole test minute ventilation (VE), tidal volume (VT), oxygen uptake (VO_2), car-bondioxide elimination (VCO_2), breathing frequency (BF) and heart rate (HF) were measured continually, blood lactate concentration at the 3rd minute of each work load. At depth the reduction of VE and HF was signifikant (p < 0,001 for 3,0 and 3,5 W/kg, p < 0,05 for 100 Wresp. p< 0,001 for 100 W and 3,0 W/kg, p < 0,01 for 3,5 W/kg), VT and BF decreased significantly at 3,5 W/kg (p < 0,05 resp. p < 0,01), the VO_2 showed a small but insignificant increase, only a tendency of CO_2-retention was found at higher work loads. At 0,4 MPa the concentration of blood lactate was significantly reduced for 3,0 and 3,5 W/kg (3,7 and 5,9 mmol/l) compared to sea level (5,2 and 8,6 mmol/l) (p < 0,001). In conclusion elevated ambient atmospheric pressure induces decreased VE, VT and HF with slightly elevated VO_2 and reduced VCO_2. Whether hyperoxia and higher oxy- gen support to the working muscles cause the decreased blood lactate concentration or the lactate metabolism is directly influenced by elevated ambient pressure cannot be decided from our results.
