The regulator, Ofwat, has clarified its position regarding the possibility that some of the bidders lining up to buy Thames Water may be too highly geared for regulatory comfort. An Ofwat spokeswoman told Platts: " If Thames' new owners were highly geared or had to take on a lot of debt we would have to take steps to ensure that the regulated industry was protected and thereby the interests of customers were protected." The spokeswoman specifically denied a Reuters report that Ofwat was likely to change the license terms of Thames Water to ensure debt levels were kept in check by any new owner. "We've never said we'd change the license conditions of Thames or any other company," she said.
