摘要

Water: A Turbulent History, by Stephen Halliday, whilst containing much of interest, is a rather puzzling book which appears to lack a common thread. The general reader may complain of too much detail, whilst the specialist may find the information too basic. Beginning with the history of London's water and the work of Sir Hugh Myddleton and his construction of the New River bringing water to the capital, it goes on to describe the history of fenland water drainage in East Anglia, and the development of inland waterways, before examining waterwheels, steam power and electricity.
