Water activities continued to generate about half of Veolia Environnement's operating profits last year. Of total EBIT (earnings before interest and tax) amounting to ?1,616 million (up 13.5%), water businesses contributed ?830.3 million (up 12.2%), according to figures calculated on a "new perimeter" basis and at constant exchange rates. Other sectors generated EBIT of ?455.8 million (up 22.4%) in the case of waste management, ?295.8 million (up 7.8%) in the case of energy services, and ?103.3 million (up 12.5%) in the case of transport businesses. Real progress has been made at the level of group net profit, where the company was ?125.4 million in the black last year, against ?2,054.7 million in the red in 2003. Equally impressive has been the reduction of indebtedness, which was cut to ?9.8 billion at the end of last year from ?12.5 billion a year earlier.
