GWR well remembers the air of excitement surrounding the water business in the mid-1990s, when charismatic and flamboyant speakers toured the conference circuits presenting exciting visions of a global market ripe for the picking. Banks rushed out reports entitled "Come On In, The Water's Lovely!" Those days are gone, with all their dizzy rapture. The Economist's latest Water Industry conference was called Meeting Tomorrow's Challenges. This was the cold light of dawn. It was time to face reality and time to concentrate on forcing down costs, preparing for the impact of the EU's Water Framework Directive and assessing the lessons learned from the UK regulator's last price review - in fact, the nuts and bolts of running a profitable regulated business.
