While research reveals that there are approximately 5,000 CTP printing plants in the U.S., that could change as chemistry-free and processless plates take hold. The quality and durability of these plating technologies continue to improve. It has been nearly five years since Presstek's chemistry-free Anthem thermal plate was introduced for wet offset. Agfa's processless Thermolite plate for on-press imaging made its debut at Drupa 2000. Creo, meanwhile, is a newer player in the digital plate game, active in this consumables arena since mid-2003. Here's an update on developments, both on and off press, since GAM's last coverage in July 2004.
